At Ruislip Gardens Primary School, we provide a high-quality physical education curriculum that inspires all of our pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically demanding activities.
We want to provide opportunities for our pupils to become physically literate and confident in a way which supports their health and fitness as they move towards making their own choices as young adults. We provide opportunities for children to compete in sport and other activities in order to build character and help to embed values such as teamwork, fairness and respect.
The National Curriculum for physical education aims to ensure that all pupils:
- develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- are physically active for sustained periods of time
- engage in competitive sports and activities
- lead healthy, active lives
- take part in two hours of timetabled physical education per week
Ruislip Gardens Primary School is proud to be a real legacy school and is striving to create a new ambition for EVERY child.
Not only are we on a mission to get our children more active by developing the fundamental movement skills that are so often overlooked, our PE lessons are centred around the child to enable them to be successful in the classroom and in later life.
Real legacy allows us to bring the school, home and the community together to enable cultural change. Our journey commenced with real PE teacher training to support our PE provision to develop the whole child and extends across the school to include supporting families and the wider school community. The school is supported with teacher training, school based support, fun real play activities for families, enrichment and competitive opportunities and supporting resources from Create Development all through a holistic approach to also develop children's personal, social and emotional skills.
We offer participation in both competitive and non-competitive activities in order that pupils can develop a confident attitude to physical activity and enhance their well-being. Our children take part in many competitions including inter-house, inter-school and borough level competitions and tournaments.
During the school day, external providers run a range of sporting activities.
Year 1 & 2: Gymnastics
Year 4: Swimming at Highgrove leisure centre
Year 5: Brentford Football club: Move and learn project.
Alongside the timetabled P.E. lessons, there is a wide range of extra-curricular sporting opportunities available, which include football (including our QPR Football club, which is run by an external provider), basketball, tennis, tag rugby, athletics, cricket, cross-country and rounders. Over the years we have won a variety of cups and trophies, some of which are on display in our Reception area.
We enjoy celebrating important events in the calendar, including National Fitness day. This day helped to raise awareness of the importance of leading a healthier and more active lifestyle. The children engaged in a range of activities including dance-offs led by Mr. B, assault courses, climbing walls, fitness challenges and mass walks.
During our annual sports day, children take part in competitive sporting events in their house teams. The events are wide and varied. They include egg and spoon races, bouncer Hooper races, target games and dressing up races. It is great opportunity for children to work together in teams, to develop resilience and lifelong skills and to invigorate friendly competition.
